Uranus is rising when\ndarkness begins. Mars rises mid-evening. It&#8217;s a little brighter and\nleft of Aldebaran rising at about the same time. Aldebaran leads one\nleg of a V-shaped asterism called the Hyades, in case you need help\nfiguring out which is which. Orion and Gemini rise late evening. Look\nfor Leo in the mid-morning darkness. Arcturus is up before dawn.\nMercury and Venus aren&#8217;t visible yet. They&#8217;re too close to the sun.\nMercury is in superior conjunction on the 8<sup>th<\/sup>. Venus went\nthrough superior conjunction last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you do see\nthe two innermost planets this month, it will be later in the month.\nBest viewing is from around 5 degrees south latitude. Even from\nthere, the planets will be low in the evening sunset light. It&#8217;ll\ntake until December for them to emerge sufficiently from solar\nconjunction for easier viewing. Mercury&#8217;s in the lead at the end of\nNovember, but Venus will catch up to it for a close pairing after\nChristmas. But certainly, look at them this month if you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturn&#8217;s\nmoving eastward in the eastern part of Capricornus The moon is just\npast first quarter on the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\nwhen it&#8217;s near the ringed planet. The moon&#8217;s a waxing crescent when\nit passes by Saturn again from the 28<sup>th<\/sup>\nto 29<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\nwaxing gibbous moon is close to Jupiter on the 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\nJupiter is retrograde the first half of the month. It&#8217;s stationary\nfrom about the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\nto about the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\nof December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nmoon is full on the 8<sup>th<\/sup>.\nIt&#8217;ll pass through Earth&#8217;s shadow for a total lunar eclipse lasting\nan hour and 25 minutes. The penumbral phase begins at 08:02 Universal\nTime. Partial phase starts at 09:09. Totality is from 10:16 to 11:41.\nPartial phase ends at 12:49. And the penumbral phase ends at 13:56.\nFor most of the Americas, this eclipse happens during moonset. The\nentire event is visible from western North America, most of the\nPacific, and northeast Asia. A sliver of the eastern Australian coast\nwill see all of it too, but it&#8217;s a moonrise event for most of the\ncontinent. Most of Asia and the northern and eastern parts of Europe\nalso see the eclipse during moonrise. It&#8217;s out of view for western\nEurope and all of Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uranus\nis a little east of the moon during the eclipse. The planet&#8217;s at\nopposition on the 9<sup>th<\/sup>,\napproximately 18.7 astronomical units or 2,795 million km from us.\nThe moon&#8217;s proximity doesn&#8217;t help us see it at opposition. It&#8217;s\npossible, but tricky. You&#8217;ll need magnification. But look for Uranus\nduring the eclipse. The moon&#8217;s never completely dark during a total\neclipse, but it&#8217;ll be dark enough to make a big difference. The moon\nwill be close to the Pleiades during the eclipse and on the 9<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See this eclipse\nif you can. The next one won&#8217;t happen until March 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars\nstarts the month almost stationary in the easternmost region of\nTaurus. It&#8217;s soon clearly retrograde on a course that will eventually\ntake it back by the Hyades. A past full moon goes by the red planet\non the 10<sup>th<\/sup>\nand 11<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moon\nphases this month: first quarter on the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\nat 06:38 UT, full on the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 11:03, last quarter on the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 13:28, new on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup>\nat 22:58, last quarter on the 30<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 14:37.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nmoon crosses the equator going north on the 5<sup>th<\/sup>,\nis at northern lunistice at 27.5 degrees on the 12<sup>th<\/sup>,\ngoes south of the equator on the 20<sup>th<\/sup>,\nand reaches southern lunistice at 27.5 degrees on the 26<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lunar\napogee is on the 14<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 404,800 km distance. Perigee is on the 26<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 362,800 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercury\nwill be at aphelion on the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 0.467 a.u. or 69.9 million km from the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nLeonid meteor shower can be seen nearly all month. Its peak is\nNovember 17<sup>th<\/sup>\nand 18<sup>th<\/sup>.\nThe meteors you see from such a shower can be caused by comet dust\nleft behind hundreds of years ago. Leonids come from Comet\n55P\/Tempel-Tuttle. The American Meteor Society says Earth could pass\nthrough a trail left in1600 at 7 hours UT on the 18<sup>th<\/sup>,\na trail left in 1733 at about 6 hours Universal Time on the 19<sup>th<\/sup>,\nand a trail from 1800 at 15 hours UT on the 21<sup>st<\/sup>.\nThe 1733 trail may spawn the most meteors.
