Both are moving eastward. Venus moves through the Beehive Cluster or M44 the evening of July 3<sup>rd<\/sup>. The chase is on. Venus appears to be swooping in for a quick meetup with Mars. As the planets come close, a thin crescent moon is right of them on the 11<sup>th<\/sup>. The moon is above them when the planets are at their closest on the 12<sup>th<\/sup> and 13<sup>th<\/sup>. And then Venus keeps going, passing by Regulus in Leo on the 14<sup>th<\/sup>. Mars passes the bright star on the 29<sup>th<\/sup>. By that time, Venus is moving on past the lion. The best view of this sight is from low latitudes. Northern hemisphere viewers from middle and high latitudes will find the planets very low as darkness begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"733\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-and-Saturn-July-2021.jpg\" alt=\"Graphic showing the positions of Jupiter in Aquarius and Saturn in Capricornus in July 2021\" class=\"wp-image-663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-and-Saturn-July-2021.jpg 733w, https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-and-Saturn-July-2021-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturn is a late evening riser. So is\nJupiter a little while after the ringed planet. Both are retrograde\nthis month. A full moon passes south of Saturn on the 24<sup>th<\/sup>\nand 25<sup>th<\/sup>. It&#8217;s close to Jupiter on the 26<sup>th<\/sup>.\nSaturn stays in Capricornus and Jupiter in Aquarius all month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"424\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mercury-in-July-2021-40-degrees-north.gif\" alt=\"Graphic showing Mercury's movement in the morning sky July 2 to 23, 2021 from 40\u00b0 north latitude\" class=\"wp-image-664\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As dawn&#8217;s light begins, the side of the\nHyades V with Aldebaran does a good job pointing the way to Mercury\nrising. Mercury&#8217;s moving eastward, but is becoming easier to spot as\nthe month goes on because of later sunrises for northern hemisphere\nsky watchers. A thin, waning crescent moon is left of the planet on\nthe 8<sup>th<\/sup>. The messenger planet is at the feet of Gemini by\nmid-July. The planet is disappearing into the morning sun glow as it\napproaches the Castor side of the constellation. The best views of\nMercury this month are from low southern latitudes, although the\ntwins are upside down and their heads below the horizon while\nMercury&#8217;s still viewable in the twilight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"456\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mercury-in-July-2021-10-degrees-south.gif\" alt=\"Graphic showing Mercury's movement in the morning sky July 1 to 23, 2021 from 10\u00b0 south latitude\" class=\"wp-image-665\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moon is crossing the equator going\nnorth on the 1<sup>st<\/sup> when it&#8217;s at last quarter. Northern\nlunistice is on the 9<sup>th<\/sup> at 25.6\u00b0. The moon is new the\nnext day. The moon goes south of the equator on the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\nand is at first quarter on the 17<sup>th<\/sup>. Southern lunistice is\nat 25.6\u00b0 on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. The moon&#8217;s full on the 24<sup>th<\/sup>.\nA second northward equatorial crossing is on the 29<sup>th<\/sup>. And\na second last quarter moon occurs on the 31<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moon&#8217;s at apogee on the 5<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 405,300 km. It&#8217;s at perigee on the 21<sup>st<\/sup> at 364,600 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earth is at aphelion on the 5<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 1.017 astronomical units. Mars is at aphelion on the 13<sup>th<\/sup>\nat 1.666 AU. Meteors from the\nSouthern Delta Aquariid shower radiate from a spot just a little\nsoutheast of where Jupiter is lately. And the Alpha Capricornids\nradiate from a spot a little northeast of where Saturn&#8217;s hanging out.\nIt&#8217;s hard to know which meteors you&#8217;re most likely to see. The\nSouthern Delta Aquariids peak at about 16 meteors per hour. There may\nonly be five Alpha Capricornids per hour, but they&#8217;re more likely to\nbe bright fireballs.
