Planet watching<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

June\nstarts with good views of Mercury, especially in the northern\nhemisphere. It’s at greatest elongation on the 4th<\/sup>.\nThe planet is moving through Gemini. As is always the case with the\nmessenger planet, you have to catch it quickly. By the middle of the\nmonth, it’ll be lost in the sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nLeo is high toward the west and Virgo is on the meridian at sunset.\nAquila is rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nSagittarius is up by local midnight, followed by Jupiter and then\nSaturn. The planetary pair are moving in tandem and retrograde this\nmonth between Capricornus and Sagittarius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nMars rises later in the morning hours. The red planet moves from\nAquarius to Pisces this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nVenus is unusually challenging this month. Fortunately, even when\nVenus is at its hardest to see, it’s not that hard to see. It’ll be\ntoo close to the sun to see for the first half of the month. But it\nemerges in the morning sky by the Hyades in the second half. A thin,\ncrescent moon will be next to it on the 19th<\/sup>. By the end\nof June, you will confidently find Venus above the horizon before\nmuch of the sun’s morning light is showing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eclipses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Penumbral<\/em>\n– The\nmoon will pass through the outer part of Earth’s shadow on the 5th<\/sup>.\nThe event starts at 17:46 UT. Greatest eclipse is at 19:25. The end\nis at 21:04. Visibility of at least part of the eclipse will be in\nAfrica, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. In a penumbral\neclipse, the attentive observer will see the moon’s face darken\nslightly until mid-eclipse and then brighten again. The moon may\nappear more red or orange because more of the sunlight reaching it\ngoing through Earth’s atmosphere first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annular<\/em>\n\u2013 The moon will pass in front of the sun on the 21st<\/sup>.\nIt won’t be close enough to Earth to completely cover the sun’s disk.\nRather, the sun’s disk appearing slightly bigger than the moon’s disk\nwill make a bright ring of sun around the moon. The ring, or the\nannular phase, will be visible from a spot on the border of the two\ncountries known as Congo, northeastward along the Yemen-Saudi Arabia\nborder, across northern India, southern China, Taiwan, and ending in\na spot in Micronesia. Partial phases will be visible from almost all\nof Africa, southeastern Europe, most of Asia, and part of Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greatest elongation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercury\nwill be 23.6\u00b0 east of the sun in the evening sky on the 4th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aphelion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
