Jupiter is a\nbit above them. Saturn is higher still. All four are in the western\nsky. If you&#8217;re looking for the fifth traditional naked eye planet to\njoin them, we&#8217;re sorry to disappoint you. Mars is a morning object\nand will not join the rest this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Evening-Planets-November-and-December-2019.gif\" alt=\"Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury in the evening sky November and December 2019\" class=\"wp-image-471\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If\nyou&#8217;re lucky, you may see Uranus rising right after sunset, although\nMercury and Venus may set before the sky is dark enough to see Uranus\nwith the naked eye. Not usually counted as a naked eye planet, Uranus\nactually is slightly brighter than 6<sup>th<\/sup>\nmagnitude, which is considered the cutoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For\napproximately 40 minutes on November 9, Jupiter will be visible from\nEarth without any of the Galilean satellites next to it. While Io and\nGanymede transit the planet&#8217;s disk, Europa will be behind the planet\nand Callisto will be in Jupiter&#8217;s shadow. It is uncommon to see\nJupiter \u201cwithout satellites\u201d. The last time it happened was in\n2009. In the first book of his <em>Mathematical\nAstronomy Morsels<\/em>\nseries, mathematician and astronomer Jean Meeus\nfound the 2009 \u201cJupiter without satellites\u201d event would be the\n23<sup>rd<\/sup>\nsince 1907.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"781\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-Without-Satellites-Nov.-9-2019-visibility-map.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-Without-Satellites-Nov.-9-2019-visibility-map.jpg 781w, https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-Without-Satellites-Nov.-9-2019-visibility-map-300x295.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Jupiter is\njust 40\u00b0 east of the sun for the 2019 event, there won&#8217;t be many\nplaces on Earth where it&#8217;s visible. For almost everyone, the event\nwill happen during daylight hours or at night after Jupiter has set.\nYou have a better chance of observing some of the other satellite\nevents leading up to and happening after it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a timeline\nof the Jupiter events for November 9. Times are approximate and could\nvary by a few minutes depending on how fast each moon disappears or\nreappears in your telescope or binoculars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n11:23 \u2013 11:48\tCallisto enters Jupiter&#8217;s shadow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n11:59 \u2013 12:10\tGanymede begins transiting Jupiter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n12:06 \u2013 12:11\tEuropa goes behind the planet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n12:14 \u2013 12:17\tIo begins transiting Jupiter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n12:17 \u2013 12:56\tJupiter is visible without satellites at low\nmagnification<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n12:56 \u2013 13:29\tCallisto emerges from Jupiter&#8217;s shadow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n13:00 \u2013 15:16\tIo&#8217;s shadow crosses the planet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n14:26 \u2013 14:30\tIo&#8217;s transit across Jupiter&#8217;s disk ends<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n14:40 \u2013 14:51\tGanymede&#8217;s transit ends<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n15:09 \u2013 18:03\tGanymede&#8217;s shadow crosses Jupiter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n15:15 \u2013 15:20\tEuropa emerges from Jupiter&#8217;s shadow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercury is a tough\ncatch for northern hemisphere viewers at this time. It&#8217;s making a\nhasty retreat sunward toward inferior conjunction on the 11th. The\nbest views will be from low southern latitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Transit-of-Mercury-Nov.-11-2019-visibility-map-1024x592.jpg\" alt=\"Transit of Mercury November 11, 2019 visibility map\" class=\"wp-image-473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Transit-of-Mercury-Nov.-11-2019-visibility-map-1024x592.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Transit-of-Mercury-Nov.-11-2019-visibility-map-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Transit-of-Mercury-Nov.-11-2019-visibility-map.jpg 1217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This inferior\nconjunction of Mercury will be special. From 12:35 to 18:04 UT, the\nplanet will transit the sun. A little black dot that is the planet\nwill cross the sun&#8217;s face for the first time since 2016 and for the\nlast time until 2032. Observers in Africa and western Europe will see\nthe first part of the transit. Those in South America, most of the\nAtlantic, and most of the Antarctic will see all of it. The last part\nis visible from North America and most of the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venus\nholds on in the evening sky as Jupiter moves toward the sun. The two\nplanets are close around the 24<sup>th<\/sup>.\nThey are on one side of the Sagittarius teapot while Saturn is on the\nother. By the 30<sup>th<\/sup>,\nSagittarius is setting as dusk gives way to night&#8217;s darkness. Jupiter\nis positioned a little differently, but it is still on the west side\nof the teapot lid. Venus is right on top. Saturn remains on the east\nside. Keep watching this scene. Around December 10, Saturn and Venus\nwill be paired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"515\" height=\"406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mars-and-Mercury-November-and-December-2019.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-474\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars\nis a morning object in Virgo.
