Mercury and Mars are easily seen in the west just after sunset as April starts. Mercury is at its greatest elongation, this time 19\u00b0 east of the sun on the 1st. Mars is a little above it. You<\/span>\u2019d better catch the messenger planet while you can though. It\u2019s heading toward inferior conjunction on the 20<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. However, the red planet remains easy to see all month. It\u2019s above and right of the constellation Cetus at the start of the month. By the middle of April, Mars has entered Taurus. Watch it pass between the Pleiades and the Hyades from the 23<\/span>rd<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0to the 28<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. A thin crescent moon will pass Mars on the 28<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>.<\/span><\/p>\n

For whatever it\u2019s worth, Mercury goes retrograde on the 10<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. Probably, some people prone to belief in astrology will make a big deal about it. All that\u2019s really happening, however, is the planet appears to be moving westward against the background of stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other side of the sky, Jupiter is rising at sunset. It\u2019s right of the orange star Arcturus in Bo\u00f6tes. The big planet is at opposition on the 7<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. From the 10<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0to 11<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>, a nearly full moon passes by it. Jupiter is moving westward. It starts April about a third of the way from Spica to Porrima and ends the month with about a third of the way to go yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

While we\u2019re looking at the constellations just after sunset, you\u2019ll see Leo high in the east. Cancer is higher, close to the meridian. Gemini is west of the meridian very high. And Orion is midway up in the western sky.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\"Saturn<\/span><\/p>\n

Cygnus and Aquila are rising late evening to local midnight. Look for Saturn to the right of them. From local midnight to early morning, you can see that Saturn is nicely placed between Sagittarius and Ophiuchus. The reddish-orange Antares is to the west.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\"Venus<\/span><\/p>\n

Close to dawn, you can see Pegasus. Venus is below the Great Square. Watch her move through the head of the southern fish in Pisces this month. On the 12<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>, Venus resumes direct motion. The planet is moving eastward, giving the appearance of turning around in the sky. However, it is still moving westward from the sun and will continue doing so until greatest elongation in early June. Consequently, Venus will rise earlier and earlier each morning and become easier to see. Look for a crescent moon right of Venus on the 23<\/span>rd<\/span><\/sup>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The moon passes in front of Aldebaran on the 1<\/span>st<\/span><\/sup>. The occultation is visible from Japan and the northwest Pacific Ocean. On the 7<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>, Regulus is occulted for viewers in the southeast Atlantic Ocean and from the southern tip of South America. Neptune is occulted on the 22<\/span>nd<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0for those viewing from eastern Australia, Tasmania, the Tasman Sea, and the Coral Sea. And the moon hides Aldebaran again on the 28<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0as seen from Libya, the central Mediterranean, and southeastern Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

This month the moon is at first quarter on the 3<\/span>rd<\/span><\/sup>, it is full on the 11<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>, it\u2019s at last quarter on the 19<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>, and the moon is new on the 26<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. That first quarter moon is at northern lunistice on the 3<\/span>rd<\/span><\/sup>. The moon is going south on the equator on the 10<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. Southern lunistice is on the 17<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. Northern crossing is on the 24<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. And another northern lunistice happens on the 30<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. Lunar perigee is on the 15<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and the apogee is on the 27<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
