Mars is next to it in the evening to the west. The rocky red planet is easy to identify with the naked eye. Point a telescope or binoculars at it to see the distant blue gas ball next to it. The two are just 1\u2019 9\u201d (0.019\u00b0) apart! A little below them is Venus. And below Venus is a thin crescent moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mars-by-Neptune-early-January-2017.gif\" alt=\"Mars by Neptune in early January 2017\" width=\"649\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The lunar crescent is a little thicker and closer to Venus on the evening of January 1. Mars has moved to the other side of Neptune. The two planets are farther apart. That thickening crescent moon is approaching them on the 2<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. Observers in Hawaii and parts of the Pacific Ocean from there toward Alaska and the United States west coast will see the moon cover up Neptune on the 3<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">rd<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0Universal Time or the evening of the 2<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0local time. When the occultation of Neptune ends, an occultation of Mars begins for a region of the Pacific to the west of the first event\u2019s visibility area. An observer on a trans-Pacific flight might be able to see both provided he or she is able to have enough darkness and a view upward and toward the southwest from inside the aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Venus-by-Neptune-in-January-2017.gif\" alt=\"Venus by Neptune in January 2017\" width=\"752\" height=\"566\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">By the 4<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0or the 5<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, you can easily see that Mars and Venus are moving eastward. Mars is leaving Aquarius as Venus enters it. On the 11<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, Venus appears to be closing in on Neptune which is almost exactly where it was during its conjunction with Mars. But on the 12<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, you can see that Venus doesn\u2019t pass quite as close. Neptune is also harder to see because of the first quarter moon\u2019s light. Venus just happens to be at greatest elongation 47.1\u00b0 east of the sun at this time. It and Neptune are 21\u2019 49\u201d (0.364\u00b0) apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Venus-and-Mars-in-January-2017.gif\" alt=\"Venus and Mars in January 2017\" width=\"860\" height=\"636\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Just after the middle of the month, Mars and Venus are in the region between Pisces and Aquarius. Keep watching these two into February as Venus seems about ready to catch up to Mars but then veers off to go in another direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">By the last days of January, Neptune will have moved somewhat eastward of its position at the start of the month. But it is still firmly in Aquarius. The best view will be on the 28<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0and 29<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0during new moon. The moon occults Neptune again on the 30<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. It\u2019s visible in Asia from the Gulf of Martaban to Tibet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">If you\u2019re into occultations, you\u2019ll like the one that hides Aldebaran on the 9<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. It\u2019s visible from the Northwest Pacific Basin, across China, to Nepal and parts of India north to Kazakhstan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-149\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Occultations-in-January-2017.gif\" alt=\"Occultations in January 2017\" width=\"738\" height=\"439\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Jupiter rises a little after local midnight. It\u2019s in Virgo near Spica. The big planet moves slightly eastward morning to morning for most of the month staying the north of Spica. The moon is near the big planet on the 19<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. After that, Jupiter\u2019s apparent movement slows in preparation for going retrograde. This slowdown is what\u2019s described in many almanacs as going stationary, although careful viewing with magnification reveals the planet\u2019s position isn\u2019t exactly halting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-January-15-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Jupiter January 15, 2017\" width=\"876\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-January-15-2017.jpg 876w, https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jupiter-January-15-2017-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">See Saturn during the hour or two before sunrise between Ophiuchus and Sagittarius. The ringed planet\u2019s eastward movement is slight. It doesn\u2019t move much from its position by the end of the month. Not that they\u2019re really that close, but Mercury is closest to Saturn on the 7<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0and 8<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. They\u2019re almost 22\u00b0 apart. Mercury is below Saturn. For those in the northern hemisphere, Mercury is below and left of Saturn. Mercury is at greatest elongation on the 19<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. It will be 24.1\u00b0 west of the sun. For this greatest elongation, best viewing is in the low southern latitudes, but it\u2019s not really bad from anywhere unless you\u2019re far enough south that the sun is up around the clock. A crescent moon passes Saturn on the 24<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. You should still be able to see Mercury near the \u201cteapot lid\u201d of Sagittarius by then, although for northern hemisphere sky watchers it is getting closer to the horizon before sunrise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-153\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Saturn-and-Mercury-January-8-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Saturn and Mercury January 8, 2017\" width=\"671\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Saturn-and-Mercury-January-8-2017.jpg 671w, https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Saturn-and-Mercury-January-8-2017-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The moon is crossing the equator going north when it is at first quarter on the 5<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. Full moon on the 12<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0is just after northern lunistice, so it will seem bright and close to those in the northern hemisphere. The moon goes south of the equator on the 17<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0and is at last quarter on the 19<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. Southern lunistice is on the 25<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0with new moon on the 28<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. Lunar perigee is on the 10<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0at a distance of 225,700 miles or 363,200 km. Apogee is on the 22<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0at 251,500 miles or 404,800 km.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Earth is at perihelion on the 4<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. It\u2019s 91.4 million miles or 147 million km from the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The moon is just before first quarter for the Quadrantid meteor shower. It peaks on the 4<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. This shower has a far northern radiant that\u2019s near the horizon most of the night from middle northern latitudes.
