Saturn is not far above the horizon in the southwest as darkness sets in at December 2016<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u2019s start. Left of it is Mercury. Above them both is a thin crescent moon. In just a couple of nights, the thicker crescent will be near Venus further up and left. Give the moon two more nights and it\u2019s next to Mars. A week into December and we have a first quarter moon that has passed all these planets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-128 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Moon-and-planets-early-December-2016.gif\" alt=\"Moon and planets, early December 2016\" width=\"1024\" height=\"689\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">A nearly full moon passes through the Hyades on the 12<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0and 13<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. It\u2019s full when it\u2019s over Orion\u2019s head and just past full when it\u2019s at Orion\u2019s feet on the 15<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-130 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Moon-in-Hyades-and-Gemini-December-2016.gif\" alt=\"Moon in Hyades and Gemini December 2016\" width=\"1024\" height=\"689\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Jupiter is not involved in the evening party of planets at the start of the month. It rises a couple hours after midnight. A waning gibbous moon visits the big planet on the 22<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">And on the morning of the 27<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, we see a scene reminiscent of what we saw at the start of the month. A thin crescent moon is above Saturn. Dawn\u2019s light has replaced the dusk. This has happened because while Earth orbits the sun, the planets appear to go from one side of the sun to another. Keep looking every morning and you may spot Mercury before the end of the month. The waxing gibbous moon is nearby on the 9<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. You\u2019ll find the planet more easily if you wait two weeks and look near the same spot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">If you have a dark enough location and a good pair of binoculars or a telescope, look for Neptune this month. It and Mars will draw close to each other. They\u2019ll become so close that at 06:53 UT on New Years Day they\u2019ll be 0.02\u00b0 (barely 1\u20199\u201d) apart! Find Neptune in Aquarius. It will move just a little bit from night to night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-134 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/monthly\/wp-content\/uploads\/Neptune-late-2016-then-with-Mars-2017.gif\" alt=\"Neptune late 2016, then with Mars 2017\" width=\"1024\" height=\"689\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The moon passes in front of Neptune on the 6<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. The occultation is visible in eastern Canada and Greenland. Aldebaran is occulted on the 13<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. Unfortunately, this is when the moon is full. Dimmer meteors won\u2019t be visible.
