Weekly astronomy blog for the week ending March 1, 2014<\/em><\/p>\n<p>March has two new moons. The first is on the 1<sup>st<\/sup>. First quarter follows on the 8<sup>th<\/sup>, full moon on the 16<sup>th<\/sup>, and last quarter on the 24<sup>th<\/sup>. The second new moon of the month is on the 30<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Both inner planets are at greatest elongation in the morning sky this month. Mercury is 27.6\u00b0 from the sun on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/23\/march-2014-astronomy-events\/mercury-and-venus-03142014\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1450\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1450\" title=\"Mercury and Venus 03142014\" src=\"http:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mercury-and-Venus-03142014.jpg\" alt=\"Mercury and Venus the morning of March 14, 2014. Mercury is at greatest elongation. Venus will be in eight more days.\" width=\"295\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mercury-and-Venus-03142014.jpg 295w, https:\/\/www.skycaramba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mercury-and-Venus-03142014-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/a>the 14<sup>th<\/sup>. This greatest elongation is best for viewers close to the equator and in low southern latitudes. Just a few days later on the 19<sup>th<\/sup>, Mercury is at aphelion. The planet will be 0.467 astronomical units (Earth-Sun distances) from the sun. Venus is at 46.6\u00b0 from the sun on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. The moon will pass 3.4\u00b0 north of Venus on the 27<sup>th<\/sup> and 5.9\u00b0 north of Mercury on the 29<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Mars is north of Spica all month, moving westward. The moon is in the neighborhood on the 18<sup>th<\/sup> and 19<sup>th<\/sup>. The red planet will be 4.8\u00b0 north of the star on the 25<sup>th<\/sup>. If you have a telescope, watch Mars with it this month. The planet is getting slightly bigger and will continue doing so until it\u2019s at opposition on April 8.<\/p>\n<p>Saturn is also moving westward slowly in the diamond of Libra. The moon passes by on the 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 21<sup>st<\/sup>. For some viewers, the moon will occult Saturn on the morning of the 21<sup>st<\/sup>. Much of Brazil and the South Atlantic will be in the visibility area for this event.<\/p>\n<p>Jupiter is near the star Mebsuta in Gemini. The big planet is nearly stationary as March begins. By the end of the month, it is moving noticeably eastward from night to night. Regulus will disappear for 12 seconds! An asteroid named 163 Erigone will pass right in front of it. This occultation is visible along a 45-mile wide path that starts in the Atlantic Ocean, crosses land from New York City to Bath, Ontario, to the Attawapiskat-Peawanuck area along Hudson Bay to the Baker Lake area of the District of Keewatin. Visibility times will be range from 6:06 to 6:15 Universal Time for those spots.
