Mercury greatest elongation

Mercury and Venus are closer to the sun than Earth. So they don’t go through opposition. The point at which either planet appears to be farthest from the sun before turning around is called its greatest elongation. Elongation is other senses simply means how far it appears to be from the sun.

April 1 at 10:24, 19.0° east in the evening sky

May 17 at 23:19, 25.8° west in the morning sky

July 30 at 04:34, 27.2° east in the evening sky
